ABSTRACT

In view of uncertainties regarding role of phytochemicals in treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI), the study aims at the evaluation of antimicrobial as well as antioxidant activity of chosen plant extracts. In the present study, Cascabela thevetia, Tridax procumbens, and Arctium tomentosum leaf extracts were prepared using various organic solvents. Both the qualitative and quantitative estimations of the plant extract have been done. The plant extract with best phytoconstituents was chosen for antioxidant analysis, that is, Dehydrogenase (DH) activity, as well as estimation of antimicrobial activity and MIC determination against UTI-associated pathogens, that is, Klebsiella pneumonia and Enterococcus faecalis. The results obtained showed that the T procumbens leaf extract has a wide range of phytochemicals. Various leaf extracts of T. procumbens, 128that is, ethanolic, methanolic, toluenoic, benzenoic, and acetone showed maximum antioxidant activity with 46.3 ± 0.23, 51.4 ± 0.32, 49 ± 0.76, 55.6 ± 0.24, and 56.54 ± 1.12% inhibition, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of T procumbens leaf extract showed that maximum zone of inhibition was found in case of benzene extract of T procumbens leaf extract. MIC results thus obtained showed that the MIC value for benzene extract of T. procumbens leaf extract is 5 mg/ml. To understand the mode of action, it is a prerequisite condition to first understand the availability as well as composition of phytoconstituents within plants. Thus, this study may provide a new insight to develop an eco-friendly and economically viable strategy-based research in order to treat UTI infection.
