ABSTRACT

The latest tides of urbanization in Indian cities have amplified the challenges for urban planners and policy makers to predict urban growth trajectories. The macro-level study of Lucknow’s urban agglomeration in this chapter consists of a hybrid simulation cellular automata and fuzzy urban growth modeling method, deploying the innovative capabilities of GIS and Land Use Sim software. Another micro-level study in this chapter explores the increasing infiltration of commercial gentrification in the Patrakarpuram neighborhood of the city. The implications of this study are that two types of commercial gentrification are observed in the area, with a tremendous increase in real-estate prices. The study provides a novel insight into the overlapping consequences of economic development on retail or small businesses as well as on the character of the neighborhood, while acknowledging its contribution to cosmopolitan urbanism.
