ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the climate change challenge among African cities and explores their resilience levels using a systematic review to gain insights. The apparent growth in urbanization and climate variation and change are interrelated, as stipulated in the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030. Africa is also transitioning to an urban age from a previously predominantly rural population tendency. Guneralp and others (2017) noted that the continent is one of the fastest urbanizing regions of the world. Adapting to the climate change crises and building socio-economically empowered and environmentally sustainable cities across Africa is therefore a priority. The selected articles showed the relentless efforts to enhance climate change resilience and preparedness to deal with the challenge and at the same time reduce the associated vulnerability. The suggested climate resilience measures are mute on how to leverage opportunities related to the agile nature and differing degrees of informality in towns and cities of Africa.
