ABSTRACT

“Upcycling” has emerged as a new intervention to reduce material and energy use in business processes through reusing, repairing, repurposing, and upgrading waste material in a creative way. However, upcycling is still considered as niche practice and remains unclear for many on how exactly to use upcycling for better management of waste. The objective of this chapter is therefore to explore the opportunities and challenges for upcycling. The chapter highlights technical, social, and economic aspects of upcycling practices and uncovers opportunities for better, streamlined practices to produce value-added products from waste material.
