ABSTRACT

The scores for follow-up assessment at the age of 13 are expected to be at least as high, since at this stage the interviewer training was more intensive than for the initial survey. While the sex difference was most pronounced with respect to emotional disorders and the hyperkinetic syndrome, girls appeared to manifest antisocial behaviour almost as often as boys at this age. Closer examination of the frequencies of specific symptoms revealed that neurotic fears, lying and psychosomatic symptoms such as stomach ache definitely decreased, whereas social withdrawal, asthmatic disorders and learning problems showed the largest increases between the ages of 8 and 13 years. Although of necessity different measuring instruments must be used for different age groups, it is assumed that the same construct is involved and that the same variables are being measured.
