ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the “St. Petersburg Strategy for the preservation of cultural heritage”, which does not pay enough attention to the unique landscapes of the historical center, which were lost in the course of urban development since the mid-nineteenth century. The study is based on the example of the territories of the urban core around the Neva River, the analysis of evolution is carried out, the areas with the greatest lost landscape potential are identified, the possibilities and ways of their regeneration are considered. The influence of public gardens on the spatial parameters of the environment is analyzed. The authors concluded that the widespread belief about the perfection and completeness of the urban environment of St. Petersburg is valid only at the strategic level, but cannot automatically extend to specific territories. In the core of the center, the largest gaps are outlined and the nodes that destroyed the unity of the three-dimensional framework are named. It is recommended to regenerate the open spaces around the Admiralty based on the methods of careful landscape reconstruction of the green areas located here.
