ABSTRACT

The significance of lymphatic function has been increasingly recognized as an important factor in the development of arteriosclerotic disease. Recent investigation has supported the role of lymphatic flow in reverse cholesterol transport. The lymphatic system not only balances fluid conservation but is the center for clearing toxins, modulating inflammation and transmitting messages between other organs and systems. Lifestyle changes like appropriate exercise, a high-flavonoid and high-polyphenol vegetable diet, and stress reduction have all been shown to increase lymphatic flow and benefit vascular health. Although this theory was developed in 1981, until recently, investigations into the role of lymphatics in cardiovascular disease had been limited. Research into the role of the lymphatics should be encouraged.
