ABSTRACT

Over the past few decades, nitric oxide (NO) has gained considerable attention due to its role in the onset and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Loss of production of NO is the earliest event in the development of CVD. Therefore, therapeutic or lifestyle strategies that prevent the loss of NO or restore its production will have profound effects on the prevention, treatment and curing of CVD. There are specific foods, lifestyle events and drugs that inhibit the production of NO, and there are those that can enhance or restore the production of NO. This chapter will highlight the importance of NO in controlling CVD and reveal how NO production is negatively affected by certain foods, lifestyle habits and drugs. It also reveals how certain foods, supplements and lifestyle habits can improve NO production and have a positive impact on the number one killer of men and women worldwide.
