ABSTRACT

I should like to begin by offering a map that shows the position of prevention in the total spectrum of the efforts society makes in order to control mental illnesses. After this review of prevention in context, I shall turn to the question of its content. This will open the way for introducing some ideas derived from epidemiological considerations and for discussion of the meaning of 'global' and the meaning of 'specific'. At the end, on the basis of the material brought forward, there will be suggestions for the construction of a new map.
