ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and a frequent cause of death in forensic medical practice. A practical understanding of clinical elements of TBI and the neuropathology of trauma is therefore essential for pathologists who perform medicolegal autopsies and specialists in other disciplines allied to forensic pathology. This Chapter will outline the key pathologic features that occur in the brain caused by blunt force trauma and inertial injury. This Chapter will also discuss the pathology associated with abusive head trauma in infants and children and offer practical guidance for post-mortem examination in cases of death related to traumatic brain injury.
