ABSTRACT

Blunt force injuries occur when the body is hit with an object or strikes against an object or surface, such as the ground. Types of blunt force injuries include abrasions, contusions, lacerations, and fractures, and these may be encountered as the result of motor vehicle collisions, falls, inflicted blows, and many other scenarios. Blunt force injuries are commonly encountered in autopsies and may or may not be the cause of death or a contributing factor in the death. They can also be sustained during resuscitation efforts, and it is important for the pathologist to recognize and not misclassify these injuries. This Chapter discusses specific types and classifications of blunt force trauma.
