ABSTRACT

Forensic practitioners must be aware of the varied nature of sexual activity and its possible fatal outcomes. Death may occur as a rare complication of consensual sexual activity and those cases considered to be natural or accidental may not need criminal investigation. Investigation will use the evidence of the forensic practitioners to explain the cause of death and the manner of death to ensure that the appropriate conclusions are recorded. The forensic pathologist must be aware of the nature of evidence collection recording and how sexual activity may result in death and be aware of how trends in fatalities from sexual activity can change. Sexual homicides will be subject to fully criminal investigation. This Chapter outlines and gives examples of natural, accidental and criminal deaths linked to sexual activity.
