ABSTRACT

Radiology plays a central role in the forensic investigation of suspected non-accidental injury. The presentation of the infant and child victim of non-accidental injury may be varied and may take the form of physical or sexual or emotional abuse or neglect, as well as fabricated or induced illness (FII) (formerly referred to as Munchausen Syndrome by proxy), for example, poisoning. This chapter will focus on the commoner radiologic features of non-accidental injury - specifically, those occurring in physical child abuse - including soft-tissue injuries and skeletal fractures and abusive head trauma. The salient features which should alert the medical professional to suspected non-accidental injury will be discussed as well as the appropriate imaging investigations used in the forensic radiologic evaluation of the commoner injuries that may occur.
