ABSTRACT

This Chapter describes Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). FGM/C is a form of child abuse against women that is perpetuated through generations. Forensic practitioners should be familiar with forms of FGM/C and the medical practice’s legal mandatory reporting requirements in their relevant jurisdiction.

The Chapter considers the cultural background of FGM/C, prevalence, variation and the effect of globalization and modernization on the practice. The short-term and long-term consequences are described.

Patients with a history of FGM/C, or children with suspected FGM/C should be referred to specialist clinics to help diagnose, support, educate, and manage any long-term complications. A trauma informed assessment should be employed by clinicians seeing children and women with FGM/C.
