ABSTRACT

The protection of polymeric coatings by adapting self-healing mechanisms is a promising strategy in the field of green tribology. Therefore, self-healing can be seen as a subject of several review articles. However, there is no study expressly dedicated to the working mechanism of different functional components (capsules, inorganic nano-fillers) embedded in the coatings. In this article we classified the coating based on the working principle of functional components for a better understanding. Further, the content of this article includes comparisons of different established techniques in self-healing. We also counted the modifications to the established techniques performed by researchers over a period of the last two decades (2000–2020). Additionally, details and working of microscopic techniques used for the analysis of coating are included as well.
