ABSTRACT

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing the COVID-19 was reported in the Wuhan, Hubei province, China, during December 2019. This zoonotic disease was transferred from bats to the humans through an unknown animal intermediate. This virus spreads through surfaces that the infected person recently touched or the air infected by breathing out and the droplets expelled out from the mouth or nose during sneezing, coughing, and speaking. So far, no effective vaccine has been found and social distancing is being employed globally to lower down the disease spread. In this chapter, the history, taxonomy, epidemiology, symptoms, and possible control of COVID-19 is discussed.
