ABSTRACT

Board games are no longer just the fun, mindless distraction that kids play together to pass the time away. Since 1996, board games have steadily increased in sales, appealing to a larger age range of players. The complexity of the rules of many of these games breaks preconceived notions of the typical facile board games advertised on TV on Saturday mornings. While there has always been a small percentage of games devoted to greater levels of difficulty, today those complex games are in higher numbers than their more simplistic counterparts. Many of these complex board games are rife with a rich story. How these stories are told and what makes one story more successful than another through this medium are the focal points of this article.
