ABSTRACT

Today’s board games – or, more aptly, analog games – offer technological components that deepen the immersion of the experience. But one need not go far or spend that much money on technology to experience that next level of fun. Apps and websites provide extra layers of immersion that organically fit within the design and fiction of these games. With technological components intact, these games are known as hybrid games.

The narrative of these games flourishes with technology, as it offers a deeper penetration into fictional worlds. This article analyzes 3 hybrid games from a design and narrative perspective. Upon identifying the unique affordances of each game, the author then provides suggestions on how to create a successful story experience for the hybrid category.
