ABSTRACT

Sandwich structures are utilized as structural elements and have high specific bending stiffness and strength at reduced weight. These properties lead to their application in aeronautical and civil industries where they would be subjected to various mechanical loadings. This chapter specifically concentrates on the low-velocity impact of textile-based sandwich structures, covering the basic concept of impact with a comprehensive review of manufacturing of different types of sandwich composites along with their characterization techniques and damage mechanism post-impact. The design of textile-based sandwich structures incorporating different structural and material parameters affecting the mechanical properties along with novel materials and designs covering auxetic and integrated structures, and incorporation of dual cores, nano-materials and metal sheets is extensively discussed.
