ABSTRACT

Sandwich structures play an important role in aerospace, marine, sporting, automotive and many other fields. This chapter reviews the fabrication approaches and mechanical characteristics of metallic and composite lattice sandwich structures. The processes of fabrication techniques of the metallic and composite lattice sandwich panels are firstly described and summarized. The achievements and shortcomings are also discussed. Furthermore, the mechanical characteristics of the lattice sandwich structures are introduced in terms of static and dynamic properties including compression, shearing, bending, vibration, impact and blast. By summarizing the recent research about the metallic core- and truss core-based composite sandwich structures, it can be found that the multifunctional integrated design for the lightweight structures has become a trend, especially for the lattice sandwich structures.
