ABSTRACT

Nutraceuticals, functional foods, ingredients, and dietary supplements are novel products that are being analyzed and studied due to their health benefits and functional interactions in the human body as they contain 52bioactive compounds that have specific functionality in our systems, such components may be carotenoids, polyphenols, essential fatty acids (EFAs), pigments, dietary fibers and probiotics among other bioactive compounds. These biological compounds of interest contained within these products possess anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antimicrobial, analgesic, and prebiotic properties that show to have positive effects in the prevention of many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes type 2. Regulation of these products has also been present in many parts of the world, such as the United States, European Union (EU), and Japan, where they possess their classification and need to pass a vigorous and strict process for the product to have its health claim accepted.
