ABSTRACT

Recent trends in biodegradable polymers are focused on evolving new design strategies and technologies in order to obtain advanced polymers with improved performance. This chapter presents an up-to-date of the main types of biodegradable polymers and discusses their outstanding properties. Also, there are presented the most significant biomedical applications of biodegradable polymers, like implantable large or small devices, drug delivery vehicles, patches, or tissue engineering scaffolds. The recent technological advances of biodegradable polymers offer great promise toward achieving biodegradability with less pollutants and greenhouse emissions.
