ABSTRACT

Adolescence is a period marked by sudden emotional and physical changes, and adolescents have nutrition needs that are different than those of younger children or adults. Eating disorders remain a common and significant challenge in the adolescent population, as rapid changes in body habitus may promote dissatisfaction with body image. If not appropriately recognized and treated, eating disorders may lead to a variety of adverse health outcomes including cessation of menses with subsequent lack of bone deposition and active bone resorption, and, more life threateningly, electrolyte disturbances, cardiac arrhythmias, and death. Additionally, many adolescents may require guidance for appropriate nutrition and hydration for sports participation. This chapter will review the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of eating disorders in the adolescent and young adult population, as well as specific guidance for nutrition in adolescent athletes.
