ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes how blockchain technologies can act as the foundation for Integrated Project Delivery 4.0 (IPD 4.0). Recent attempts such as Lean Integrated Project Delivery have used a more decentralized approach to deal with construction project complexity, but blockchain offers the opportunity to take decentralization even further in an era of Industry 4.0. We describe a high-level conceptualization of IPD 4.0 based on a collective commons organizational structure, a value-based operating system, and micro-exchange approach to commercial terms. To understand the implications, we compare the traditional project delivery model, the Lean Integrated Project Delivery model, and the proposed IPD 4.0 model across organizational structures, operating systems, and commercial terms. The chapter summarizes ongoing blockchain research that can act as a starting point for IPD 4.0 and concludes with implications and directions for future research.
