ABSTRACT

THE ENERGY INDUSTRY needs a low-cost way to remotely manage and monitor serial devices simply and cost-effectively. Equipment that meets operating requirements lacks network connectivity to link to the company’s LAN/WAN. Upgrading or replacing existing serial equipment is costly and the incremental functionality does not justify the large price tag. One way to access equipment that is so widely dispersed is by using internet protocol (IP) technology that seamlessly connects serial devices to an IP network. This chapter presents several scenarios that have some elements in common: the need to access information from a central location, the importance of reducing downtime, and the ability to reduce staff time in checking and monitoring equipment at many locations.
