ABSTRACT

With the rapid expansion of the use and capabilities of the internet, it is only natural that the allure of remote data monitoring and control for multiple locations using vast quantities of data has evolved. This can be implemented as part of a comprehensive energy management strategy by facility owners with multiple sites. New software techniques and display systems are discussed for EMCS and industrial SCADA units and advanced meter reading equipment for utility billing. In the past energy managers had to be content with monthly energy billing data as the sole basis for determining energy optimization strategies. Now with the advent of web-enabled real-time solutions, facility energy managers will be able to modify the energy optimization strategies to respond to supply side cost reduction opportunities as well as the facility’s normal demand side management features. Impacts of advanced meter reading for utility charges and the technology available today are presented, along with case studies. From this work, the potential value for monitoring for greenhouse gas emissions and predictions of future technology trends are presented.
