ABSTRACT

“Sustainable development is development that improves the long-term health of human and ecological systems. The strategy avoids fruitless debates over ‘carrying capacity,’ ‘needs,’ or sustainable end states, while emphasizing the process of continually moving toward healthier human and natural communities. In theory the direction of this process can be agreed upon though participatory processes in which all relevant stakeholders are represented, and progress can be measured by means of various performance indicators.”
