ABSTRACT

Marine organisms have a crucial role in the implementation of services useful for humans and animals. In particular, the potential of seaweed, microalgae and cyanobacteria are implied for different uses: food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries.

Considering their great abundance in our water systems and the huge number of species already used as a source of food and pharmaceutical products, a lot of research is going on to fully understand the advantages that seaweeds, microalgae and cyanobacteria could give us for a better and healthy lifestyle.

This chapter focuses on the importance of algae, microalgae and cyanobacteria as a source of food and pharmaceutical-based products and the use of wastewater for their cultivation. Considering the source of wastewater, it is possible to reuse it, with also the possibility of using it as a growth medium for cultivation systems.
