ABSTRACT

In this study, a new set of functionalized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were utilized successfully in asphalt. HEMA-PDA/PAN (HPAN) fibers, which were surface grafted with polyadopamine and polyhydroxyethyl to promote the asphalt-fiber adhesion and to avoid the creation of weak interfaces in modified asphalt, were added in asphalt and the results showed significant increase of material modulus. Based on the microstructure morphological analyses performed in scanning electron and atomic force microscopes, the surface of polydopamine functionalized fibers was rough with nano-particles on their surface indicating the new substances formed.
