ABSTRACT

This age of innovations in digital technologies has impacted the industry, including the energy sector, in an unprecedented manner. With the changing energy landscape and continuous evolution and application of digital solutions, plant operators can now benefit from asset optimization, improved equipment life and improved data visibility across the plants. The aim of the chapter is to highlight some of the technological solutions that have been employed in the digitalization journey for design engineering services in various domestic and international power projects. Although the technologies are changing very quickly, the point to be pondered upon includes broadening the horizon of digital applications into the power plant industry along with increasing the extent of such technologies into particular applications. Various applications, such as partial discharge measurements for turbo-alternators, remote synchronization of EHV circuit breaker from power plant, monitoring of EHV cable sheath temperature through distributed temperature sensing (DTS), online composite monitoring system (CMS) for large sized generator transformers and integrated security systems, have been dealt with in the chapter. The concepts used in the chapter may well be extended to other digital technologies used for control and monitoring systems, smart city projects, control of remote unmanned substations, predictive data analytics, intelligent forecasting solutions etc.
