ABSTRACT

This chapter will present the latest technology trends in microstrip patch antenna used for LTE applications. Antenna gain and antenna size are the center of discussion for antenna comparison. All the major approaches are discussed in this chapter, which offers the pros and cons of different technologies. Generally, it is evident that spiral antenna design yield wide bandwidth and high gain for the loss of compactness of antenna size. On the other hand, microstrip patch antenna is known for narrowband and compact size of antenna structure. Among all approaches, particularly spiral design and metamaterial approaches in microstrip patch antenna are demonstrated in detail. The designs considered here are simple so that the concept of comparison remain at the forefront, clear to the reader. These two novel designs are compared, which shows that in terms of LTE band achievement, spiral antenna achieves 2 LTE bands with Bluetooth frequency band and metamaterial antenna achieves 2 LTE bands whereas the size of metamaterial antenna is 2.5 percent of spiral antenna. So due to size the applications of spiral antennas are limited so an improvement in metamaterial antenna to achieve more LTE bands with reasonable gain will have more options for its applications. In the result section, both are discussed for their results to conclude their individual characteristics that are suitable for different LTE applications.
