ABSTRACT

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus with multisystemic involvement. This global pandemic has disrupted normal life, affecting the lives and livelihood of people across the world. Every state’s health department is struggling to identify COVID-19 patients and to curb the infection, but it is difficult to do so due to factors such as huge population, lack of testing facilities, asymptomatic patients, and noncompliance to name a few. The AI-based techniques can be used in mass surveillance systems, for early detection of disease, tracking and warning systems to curtail spread of virus, and for repurposing and discovery of drugs, to mention a few. This chapter investigates various AI-based applications used for early detection and timely interventions to improve recovery rate, COVID-19 crisis management, in forecasting epidemiological models, and to detect COVID-19 using Deep Neural Network models on medical images. Many well-curated COVID-19 datasets and repositories are discussed to facilitate future research towards bringing solutions for an ongoing pandemic. The chapter also highlights some of the challenges encountered with solutions based on AI for management of COVID-19 pandemic.
