ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines what to expect after speaking up against scientific misconduct that includes bullying, harassment, or discrimination. It explains how to navigate the workplace grievance process, what the most common traits of “independent” investigations into allegations of workplace bullying or harassment are, and how to escalate complaint internally and externally if the people find the outcomes of internal investigation as biased and/or unfair. In a 2019, a survey of 399 whistleblowers conducted by All Party Parliamentary Group revealed that 78% of respondents experienced retaliation and only 8% felt their company was generally supportive to their complaint. The cycle of abuse ranges from isolation, scrutiny, counters accusations, disciplinary action, demotion/pay reduction, dismissal/forced resignation, nondisclosure agreements, and ignored allegations or case dismissal following an independent investigation.
