ABSTRACT

Conventional microscopic ear surgery, with the use of large incisions, bone removal and wide exposures to access disease, has remained unchanged for decades despite advancements in minimally invasive techniques in other surgical fields. The introduction of endoscopes in otology has led to a better understanding of ear anatomy, etiopathology of various chronic otological diseases and the evolution of less invasive surgical techniques, which have in turn translated into reduced patient morbidity and comparable, if not better, surgical outcomes. This chapter aims to highlight the various indications, major advantages and disadvantages of endoscopic otological procedures.
