ABSTRACT

Single-sided deafness has been a neglected entity in otology practice for long. The problems are multifold, including lack of awareness amongst patients as well as clinicians, late detection, lack of acknowledgement of the disability it causes and the limited options available for auditory rehabilitation of these cases. This chapter highlights the unique problems associated with single-sided deafness and its consequences on cognition, speech and language development, academic performance and quality of life. It discusses the aetiology and various options available for auditory rehabilitation. A management algorithm for a case with single-sided deafness has been proposed.
