ABSTRACT

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a six-carbon (C6), fully fluorinated alkane with a sulfonic acid functional group. PFHxS is the third most-frequently detected perfluoroalkyl acid. This section briefly evaluates PFHxS toxicity data, which is limited, compared with perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The lack of information prevents development of toxicity reference values (TRVs). However, given its structural similarity to PFOS, it is often assumed that PFHxS will induce similar effects to the 8-chain sulfonic acid. In fact, toxicological studies with rodents suggest a similar toxicological profile, albeit at a lower potency.
