ABSTRACT

Treatment planning requires the personalized dosimetry for the estimation of the absorbed dose in the target area as well as other organs of each patient. MIRD scheme is a method which is employed to estimate the absorbed dose in the organs of interest if there is an administration of a specific dose of a radiopharmaceutical. The limitation of the representation of non-homogenous radioactivity distribution inside the source-organs can be overcome with the utilization of voxels. Monte Carlo simulation is utilized in internal dosimetry as it is accurate approach of the dosimetric calculations. MATLAB provides ready-made codes and routines for Nuclear Medicine dosimetry purposes. The main disadvantage of planar imaging is the lack of three-dimensional information. The addition of classical three-dimensional anatomical images, like CT or MRI, can partly eliminate this limitation. Clinical dosimetry requires standardized procedures for the estimation of the absorbed dose, but it is known that there is a heterogeneous activity distribution, depending on the organ or tumor.
