ABSTRACT

It is an incredible phenomenon that algae drive photo energy to synthesize their food and widely donate their nutrient potentials to other organisms in the form of food and feed by participating in the food cycle. Much archaeological evidence and scientific archives have effectively acknowledged algal usage for food and medicine, particularly by the peoples of island nations and coastal community of the Asia Pacific realm. In the present time, the use of algae is indispensable in the food and nutraceutical sectors due to its immense value in terms of nutrients and lifesaving drugs. This chapter discusses the merits of the use of whole edible macro and microalgae and its components for consumption and use in the food sector relevant to its livelihood and economic perspectives. Further, this chapter outlines the algal nutrients for sustainable food and includes a note on industrially bioactive compounds for nutraceutical purposes. Overall, a complete review confined to the algae and its products given on whichever presently approved edible for food and nutraceutical applications.
