ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Generally, there are two different kinds of skin cancer: benign and malignant. As benign and malignant melanoma have similarities at the early stages, it is not easy to distinguish between them. However, early detection of melanoma is key as it can lead to a highly successful treatment rate. Moreover, early detection of melanoma can be increased with the use of Computer-Aided Diagnosis. Melanoma is the 15th most commonly occurring cancer in the world. In 2020, there were 100,350 new cases of melanoma, and the rates of skin cancers have been steadily increasing, now doubling approximately every 15 years. This paper presents different methods for initial stage melanoma skin cancer recognition using medical images.
