ABSTRACT

Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) consisting of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) is an inevitable part of the modern power grid. PMU gives real-time measurements of power system state variables which could be employed for several time-critical applications such as fault detection, voltage control, islanding detection etc. Since the reporting rate of PMU is very high, advanced data processing and storage techniques are essential to dig useful information from PMU data. This paper presents an overview of utility big data issues related to PMU driven applications and their solutions through modern data storage and processing techniques.
