ABSTRACT

The industrialized nations have led the way in regulating pollutant sources, mostly on national levels. However, progress is also being made in regional alliances. The cooperation between the United States and Canada to tackle the mutual problem of acid rain is just one example of the type of effort needed in this area. Regarding water concerns, the province of Ontario earlier promulgated the Safe Drinking Water Act of 2002. Additional details and methods for reducing the greenhouse effect are discussed in Part II. The EPA is working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and other federal agencies to better understand the effects of global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion. The major challenge is to develop a better understanding of the effects of stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming on human health, agriculture, and natural ecosystems.
