ABSTRACT

Essential oils (EOs) constitute terpenoidal compounds with less mol. wt that are used to treat various ailments. Recently, EOs have gained attention because of their biological properties including antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities. For quality control or chemical characterization of EOs, robust analytical tools and novel procedures are required. Various spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques have been employed for the quality assessment of EOs. This chapter mainly covers the characterization methods used for EOs.
