ABSTRACT

Drug repurposing is an approach that can provide findings in minimum time, with better safety profile and at lower cost. As COVID-19 is progressing with more mortality, drug repurposing is a quick alternative to decrease the progression of the virus. So far, various medications such as antibiotics, antiviral drugs, antimalarial, glucocorticoids, and monoclonal antibodies have been used. Additionally, using antiviral-based natural products such as essential oils (EOs) as adjunct or supportive therapy appears to be a feasible and effective approach to combat this viral pandemic. The anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, bronchodilatory, and antiviral properties of EOs can be used against the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Thus, both strategies, drug repurposing and natural product explorations, can be used to discover a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19.
