ABSTRACT

Essential oils (EOs) have received great interest for different applications. However, due to their complex chemical profiles, they could be highly toxic to biological systems even at low dose. Regardless of the requirement, severe toxicity assessment in terms of safety assessment has not been described until now. Nevertheless, their safety as well as toxicity profiles on different age groups, on different comorbid patients, and during pregnancy and childbirth need to be established. Topical complications such as hypersensitivity and allergic reactions, acute inflammation, itching, and sensitization are the major concerns. Combinations or blends in different proportions make the multicomponent systems of EOs more complex, which can increase toxicity and impact safety. This chapter discusses toxicity.
