ABSTRACT

As COVID-19 progresses, drug repurposing is a quick way to decrease the progression of the virus. Various medications such as antibiotics, antiviral drugs, antimalarial, glucocorticoids, and monoclonal antibodies have been used so far. Additionally, using antiviral-based natural products such as essential oils (EOs) as adjunct or supportive therapy appears to be a viable as well as efficient method to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The biological potential of such therapeutics include inducing immunomodulation, brochiodilation, and reducing inflammation and viral inhibition effects which can be used against pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Thus, both strategies, drug repurposing and natural product exploration, can be used to discover a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19.
