ABSTRACT
In the article the preconditions and features of formation of distant estates of the higher nobility are considered on the example of Yamburg uyezd as a whole and estate of Pustomerzha in particular. The main historical stages of development of estate construction in the territory of the Saint Petersburg governorate are described in brief. The authors of scholarly works engaged in research of historical estate complexes located on the territory under consideration are given. Landscape and geographical features of Yamburg uyezd and groups of estates located in accordance with them are revealed. The characteristic features of the functional use and planning structure of distant estates of the highest nobility are described. As an example, we consider the gradual formation of the Pustomerzha estate, which is located among the largest group of estates in Yamburg uyezd on the Izhora plateau. The research is based on scholarly works of previous years, extensive archival, bibliographic and cartographic material and field surveys.
