ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces soil and rock from the perspective of practising engineers who use them for construction and mining projects. The basic details about India, and its states and union territories with the respective geographical information and soil types are provided. The structure of all the chapters in this book is detailed with a brief description of their sections. The importance and use of the information presented in this book have been highlighted. It is emphasised that the evaluation of soil and rock for any ground-related project shall be based on site-specific investigation and testing.
