ABSTRACT

Puducherry is a union territory of India consisting of four small unconnected districts namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Puducherry and Karaikal are adjacent to Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast, while Yanam and Mahe are adjacent to Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the Godavari River basin and Kerala at the Malabar cost, respectively. The major soil type in Puducherry is red earth along with sandy and silty loam soils, clays and pebbles. Soil tests were conducted at different locations through field and laboratory tests. Some of the selected subsoil profiles and the soil properties are presented in this chapter.
