ABSTRACT

Tripura soil characteristics vary with the topographical as well as morphological changes, from hills to riverbeds. The soils in Tripura are mostly classified into five categories. About 43% of the total land area is occupied by red loamy soil and sandy soil. The reddish yellow brown sandy soil covers about 33% of the land area. The three other types of soil are the older alluvial soil (about 10%), younger alluvial soil (about 9%) and lateritic soil (about 5%). Rapid erosion by mechanical and chemical weathering occurs due to high annual rainfall. Another factor for rapid erosion is the withdrawal of vegetation, which causes the removal of soil cover due to heavy wind, rain and anthropogenic activities. Among the natural disasters like floods, landslides and cyclones, the earthquake disaster is more prominent in Tripura. The earthquake shaking causes long fissures, subsidence, change of river courses and ground uplift that eventually affect the soil features.
