ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the soils and rocks of different parts of Chhattisgarh have been described with their geotechnical properties. Chhattisgarh has a wide variety of rocks such as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks with diverse soil formations such as Entisols, Inceptisols, Alfisols, Vertisols and Mollisols. Similarly, a huge quantity of mineral deposits like garnet, amethyst, beryl, andalusite, kyanite, sillimanite and alexandrite are available. An extensive quantity of coal, iron ore, limestone, dolomite and bauxite are also available. The state is rich in natural resources, hence many industries like thermal power plants, steel manufacturing plants, sponge iron industries and cement-manufacturing industries are situated here. Various industrial activities lead to the generation of significant industrial by-products and wastes such as fly ash, bottom ash, pond ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) and mine overburden. Effective management of these industrial wastes in the construction field is also discussed in terms of their physical and mechanical properties. Soil exploration, boring log data and few case studies related to problematic soils and rocks are reported and discussed.
